A bonus earned in September is paid in the November 15 run; one earned on October 1 waits until February. That is not a catch, but it is the difference between “$50 now” and what actually happens.
How Rakuten Refer-A-Friend works
The bonus only attaches to accounts created from a referral link. Existing members cannot be referred, and a second account is a terms violation, not a workaround.

When Rakuten actually pays you

Earnings have to be confirmed by the retailer before they enter a payout window, and some stores take weeks to confirm. A purchase made days before a quarter closes will usually be paid in the following quarter, not the imminent one.
Getting the most out of a Rakuten referral
- Join when the bonus is at $50. The offer rotates between $30, $40 and $50 — if you are not in a hurry, joining during a higher-bonus window is worth more than anything else on this page.
- Plan the qualifying purchase before you sign up. The 90-day clock starts at signup, and the spend has to be at a store that actually pays Cash Back. Know what you are buying first.
- Install the browser extension. The single biggest cause of missed Cash Back is going directly to the retailer out of habit. The extension catches that.
- Stack it with a card bonus, not with another portal. Rakuten pays on top of your credit card rewards, but only one shopping portal can be credited per purchase.

Referring your own friends

The friend has to be a genuinely new member and has to spend within 90 days, so the referrals that pay are the ones sent to someone who is about to shop online anyway — before a holiday, a move, or a big-ticket purchase. Referring someone who signs up and never buys earns nothing for either of you.
